Colbert Touts Sister's Congressional Campaign

Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert is not the only one in his family with an eye on politics. His sister, Elizabeth Colbert-Busch, is running in the upcoming South Carolina 1st District special election. On Wednesday, Colbert took some time on his show to shine some national spotlight on his big sister’s campaign.

“No free airtime, Lulu,” Colbert said, referring to his sister by her childhood nickname. “As a broadcast journalist, I am obligated to maintain pure objectivity. It doesn’t matter that my sister is intelligent, hardworking, compassionate and dedicated to the people of South Carolina.”

Colbert-Busch, who is running as a Democrat, faces an uphill climb in the GOP-leaning district. President Obama won just 40 percent of the vote there last year.

Colbert offered some advice to Republicans who might end up in a debate with his sister. “This is how I used to win a lot of arguments with her when I was a kid,” he said. “Right after she makes a good point, repeat it back to her in a dumb voice.”

Marvel's Long-Term Hulk Plans Revealed

Now, all this represents a pretty general yet major bunch of  spoilers for the overall direction of the Marvel Phase 2 and Phase 3 films. So you’re warned.

In any event, the jist of the news is this: the shift from Phase 2 to Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will largely revolve around The Hulk, and it will involve incoporating both Planet Hulk and World War Hulk into the films!

Now, before we dig into specifics, remember that this writing was almost on the wall beforeThe Avengers was released. It was well-reported that the Hulk was moving MASSIVE merchandise prior to the release of the massive blockbuster, way out of proportion to his fellow Avengers. The big green guy was obviously catching on in a big way with the kids, and his treatment in the film made him a standout star. Thus, Marvel’s priorities had to shift to incorporate the coming wave of love for Banner’s alter ego. It stands to reason that Marvel would have no issue taking the mandates from the merchandising divisions and setting up major Hulk action when the genral public is flipping their shit for the character after so many tries.

This is all stuff we were covering months and months ago, even as it was clear that a solo Hulk film was a ways away.

So now the specifics of El Mayimbe’s scoop, boiled down to its gooey center:

The Avengers 2 will see the Hulk getting up to some shit that causes the film version of the Illuminati to push forward the Planet Hulk scenario, and the big guy will end up in space. Solo film will happen, and The Avengers 3 will be some kind of take on World War Hulk once Banner returns to earth.

So there you have it. Logical AND mad exciting. With so many years between now and those films coming together, there’s every chance plans could be altered. Hell, they may be purely because this cat is out of the bag! Regardless, Marvel is also likely to come outright and say this is all bullshit, just in an attempt to maintain some control over what is known and assumed. I don’t envy their position- it must be frustrating to be working so hard to put cool shit out there only to have the details spoiled so far out in advance, but that’s the nature of the game these days. Besides, these films can’t and don’t need to operate on fanboy surprise boners any longer- it’s about putting the cool shit we want to see up on the big screen in as best a form as they can. Suprises are fun, but it wasn’t Thanos’ cheeky grin that sold 1.5 billion dollars worth of tickets globally.

NEW ORLEANS -- From blowout to blackout to shootout, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens had just enough power to survive one of the most electric Super Bowls ever.

The outage flipped the momentum to the San Francisco 49ers, but the Ravens used a last-gasp defensive stand to hold on Sunday night, 34-31.

America's biggest sporting event came to a half-hour standstill in the third quarter when most of the Superdome lights and the scoreboards went dark. By then, the Ravens had a 22-point lead.

Everything changed after that, though, and the 49ers staged a sensational rally before Ray Lewis and Co. shut it down. But there were plenty of white-knuckle moments and the Ravens (14-6) had to make four stops inside their 7 at the end.

NETFLIX'S HOUSE OF CARDS OFFERS BRIGHT FUTURE

It’s hard to imagine the happiness at Netflix when they realized that House of Cards — the company’s much-heralded premiere of self-produced original programming – would debut its complete 13-episode run on the same week that the U.S. Senate held a hearing to confirm John Kerry as Secretary of State. After all, the updated American version of the 1990s BBC political drama launches with Kevin Spacey’s character, Congressman Frank Underwood, learning he won’t be nominated for that very position, a devastating insult that inspires his secret campaign to undermine the newly elected administration he pretends to serve. The show, it seemed, couldn’t be any more topical.

The problem for this new House of Cards is that despite this timely coincidence, the content of the show often feels curiously old-fashioned, especially in the context of its innovative format. That’s squarely the fault of the writing; for every smart move that writer Beau Willimon (The Ides of March)makes in updating the basic setup and plot of the BBC original for a modern American audience, he undermines his good work with clumsy dialogue and scenes that are too on-the-nose and out-of-step with the kind of sophisticated, layered writing we’ve come to expect from shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad or even Game of Thrones.

Bill O’Reilly’s bestselling book on the JFK assassination, “Killing Kennedy,” partly follows the travails of O’Reilly himself as a young reporter trying to uncover the truth behind the president’s death. As author and former Salon politics editor Jefferson Morley highlighted this week, however, O’Reilly’s firsthand accounts appear lacking in the truth department.

In an incident detailed in the book (and flagged by media outlets including USA Today) O’Reilly claims he was tracking down an interview with George de Mohrenschildt, a Russian expat with possible CIA connections who was friends with Lee Harvey Oswald. Investigators looking into the JFK assassination were seeking information for de Mohnrenschildt when he reportedly committed suicide in 1977. According to “Killing Kennedy,” O’Reilly was on the Russian’s doorstep when he heard “the shotgun blast that marked the suicide.”

SEMIAUTOMATIC HANDGUN USED TO KILL 'AMERICAN SNIPER' NAVY SEAL CHRIS KYLE

The former Navy SEAL was found shot dead with a second man, Chad Littlefield, after a gunman opened 

fire and was later taken into custody. Kyle wrote a best-selling autobiography detailing his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009. The gunman was identified as Eddie Ray Routh, 25, who may have been suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, according to local media.

He lived by the gun, and he died by the gun.

The military’s most famous sniper — Chris Kyle, a Navy SEAL who claimed to have killed more than 150 insurgents from long distances in the Iraq war — was gunned down point-blank by a mentally unstable vet at a Texas shooting range Saturday.

Kyle, 38, was visiting the Rough Creek Lodge range outside Fort Worth with friend Chad Littlefield when deranged vet Eddie Ray Routh, 25, fatally shot both men, police said.

Routh, a former Marine, fled and was later arrested at his home outside Dallas, where cops retrieved the semiautomatic handgun used to kill both men.

Kyle, a highly decorated Iraq veteran, wrote the best-selling book, “American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History.”

SECRETARY KERRY HAS BUSY FIRST WEEKEND

REID SAYS NEW REVENUE VITAL IN A BUDGET DEAL

WASHINGTON—Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid drew a red line in the budget showdown with Republicans, saying Democrats will demand additional revenue as part of any deal to alter the mandatory spending cuts set to hit at the beginning of next month.

The comments, made in an interview Sunday with ABC's "This Week," come as Senate Democrats weigh options for averting at least some of the March 1 cuts, known in Washington as the sequester. One Democratic proposal would seek to offset some of the roughly $85 billion in cuts this year with a combination of tax increases and spending cuts.

"There are a lot of tax loopholes that should be closed," the Senate's top Democrat said in the interview aired Sunday. He cited tax provisions for oil companies and for companies with operations overseas. The White House has called for similar steps as part of any deal to avert some of the March 1 cuts.

OBAMA SAYS LOOPHOLES MAY BE NEXT

WASHINGTON — President Obama said in a televised interview on Sunday that he could foresee a budget deal in Congress that did not include further increases in tax rates but instead focused on eliminating loopholes and deductions.

Mr. Obama has generally insisted that all revenue options, including higher rates, should be considered to slow the rise of federal budgetdeficits. But in the interview with Scott Pelley of CBS News, he said, “I don’t think the issue right now is raising rates.”

Having just raised rates on people earning more than $450,000 a year, Mr. Obama said the focus now should be on targeted spending cuts and changes to the tax code, which he said favored the wealthy.

SOUTH KOREA, US BEGIN NAVAL DRILLS AMID NUCLEAR TENSIONS

The scheduled drills, involving a US nuclear submarine, come after North Korea said it was planning to carry out its third test of a nuclear device.

The North has criticised the naval drills as "war-mongering".

But South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Jung Seung-Jo said the presence of the nuclear-powered submarine USS San Francisco in the region "would itself serve as a message to North Korea".

At about 2:40 p.m. ET, the homepage for Amazon, the world's largest online retailer, went down for approximately a half an hour. Shoppers looking for clothes or books were redirected to a blank page that said "Service Unavailable."

The website "Down For Everyone Or Just Me," not to mention an outpouring of tweets, confirms it, though Amazon URLs besides Amazon.com appeared to be working. As of publication, the site is working again.

3D PRINTERS INSERTED INTO GUN DEBATE

A 24-year-old law-school student is bringing a new weapon to the fight over gun control: three-dimensional printers.

The notion may sound far-fetched, but Cody Wilson and a small team of Second Amendment defenders are working to develop ways for people to circumvent some gun-control proposals by furnishing the know-how to make weapons parts at home using 3D printers.

Mr. Wilson has already proved it is possible to make plastic versions of the high-capacity ammunition magazines that President Barack Obama and other mostly Democratic lawmakers are looking to ban. Four days before Mr. Obama unveiled his gun-control agenda, which includes a proposal to ban the sale of high-capacity ammunition magazines, Mr. Wilson appeared in a YouTube video firing a Colt M-16—the rifle long favored by the U.S. Army—with a 30-round plastic magazine made by a 3D printer.

CALIFORNIA HISPANIC POPULATION OUTNUMBER WHITE POPULATION BY 2014

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California's Hispanic population will equal that of whites this year before becoming the state's largest demographic group in 2014 for the first time since statehood in 1850, a government report showed on Thursday.

That change in the most populous U.S. state will make it the third where whites do not comprise a plurality of the population, after New Mexico and Hawaii.

The shift is occurring alongside nationwide growth in the Hispanic population, which grew to 16.7 percent of the total in 2011 from 12.5 percent in 2000, according to U.S. Census figures.

It also comes amid a national debate on immigration that Democratic President Barack Obama waded into this week when he outlined his goals for immigration reform in a speech in Las Vegas.

TEXAS DISTRICT ATTORNEY SHOT, KILLED IN FRONT OF COURT HOUSE

An assistant district attorney in North Texas was shot and killed as he arrived at the courthouse where he worked on Thursday.

The Associated Press reports:

"Mark Hasse, 57, had exited his vehicle in the parking lot behind the Kaufman County Courthouse annex and was walking toward the building when he was shot multiple times just before 9 a.m., said Kaufman County spokeswoman Pat Laney. Hasse was taken away in an ambulance, but Laney did not know if he died at the hospital or en route.

"Investigators were searching for two suspects believed to have fled in an older model Ford Taurus either brown or silver in color. Officials didn't immediately indicate any motive for the shooting in Kaufman, located about 33 miles southeast of Dallas."

BURGER KING FINDS HORSE MEAT AT EUROPEAN SUPPLIER

 Burger King announced Thursday that it had terminated its relationship with European supplier Silvercrest Foods after finding traces of horse meat in beef patties at a Silvercrest facility.

Silvercrest provided beef for Burger King restaurants in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark. Burger King said that while samples of beef from restaurants in these countries showed no evidence of contamination, four samples from a Silvercrest plant in Ireland showed "very small trace levels of equine DNA."

Burger King (BKW) said the tainted product was never sold in restaurants, and appeared to have originated from a sub-contracted supplier in Poland.

BLAST KILLS 25 AT MEXICAN OIL PLANT BLAST

MEXICO CITY — An explosion rocked the headquarters of Mexico's state-run oil monopoly Pemex, killing 25 people, injuring 101, and damaging three floors of Mexico's second tallest building before sending plumes of smoke into the Mexico City skyline.

The blast ripped through the lower level of a building adjacent to the Pemex tower in central Mexico City at about 3:45 p.m. local time (4:45 p.m. ET) Thursday, forcing the evacuation of 3,500 employees, company officials said.

The cause of the blast has not been confirmed. Local media reported that machinery exploded in the basement of an administrative center next to thePemex tower in Mexico City, which has more than 50 floors.

A group of bipartisan senators formally unveiled their framework for comprehensive immigration reform today, saying they are more optimistic than they have been in years for the chance of passing such legislation.

"We have come together on a set of bipartisan principles for comprehensive immigration reforms that we hope can pass the Senate in an overwhelming and bipartisan fashion," Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said today in a press conference. "We still have a long way to go, [but] this bipartisan blueprint is a major breakthrough."

OBAMA ASKS LAW ENFORCEMENT TO PUSH GUN PROPOSALS

WASHINGTON – President Obama on Monday met with police chiefs from around the country -- including three from communities affected by mass shootings -- as part of his effort to build support for the gun control measures he wants to push through Congress.

At a morning meeting at the White House, Obama asked the law enforcement officials to put pressure on lawmakers to act on the measures he endorsed in the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“If law enforcement officials who are dealing with this stuff every single day can come to some basic consensus in terms of steps that we need to take, Congress is going to be paying attention to them and we’ll be able to make progress,” Obama said.

SENATE APPROVES $50.5 BILLION IN SANDY AID

WASHINGTON – The Senate voted Monday to approve a $50.5 billion emergency aid bill for victims of Superstorm Sandy, three months after the storm began pounding the Northeast.

"We're thrilled that, finally, relief is on its way," Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey said moments after the vote.

Democratic Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey said the next step will be making sure funds are disbursed quickly to his state.

"Fate dealt us a bad hand," he said. "The damage was beyond belief."

The vote was 62-36, barely over the 60 votes needed for passage.

Wireless providers would face limits on early termination fees and must unlock phones under "reasonable terms" under new draft guidelines released Monday by Canada's telecommunications regulator.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission is asking the public for feedback on its draft "wireless code" via an online discussion that will remain open until 5 p.m. Feb. 15, the last day of a public hearing in Gatineau, Que., on the code. The hearing begins on Feb. 11.

AMERICA'S ECONOMY: LOOKING BETTER

NO MORE STAR WARS 3D PREQUELS TO BE RELEASED

Disney has announced that there will be no more releases of the 3D versions of Star Wars prequels. The decision doesn't come as a shock to movie viewers as Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 3D never recovered it's production costs. The prequels to the Star Wars films have long been degraded by fans as being "not true" to the originals. Disney has also scrapped plans for a 3D reincarnation of The Little Mermaid citing revenue outlooks. 

Ashton Kutcher's Diet for Jobs Role Landed Him In Hospital

Ashton Kutcher went on the same fruitarian diet Steve Jobs consumed, and it landed him in the hospital with pancreatic problems.

“I went to the hospital two days before we started shooting the movie. I was doubled over in pain.”

“My pancreas levels were like completely out of whack. It was really terrifying, considering everything.”

‘Jobs,’ which is due out in April, has been criticized by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniakfor veering too far from the truth.

J.J. Abrams to Direct Star Wars: Episode VII

The director of the next Star Wars movie has been found! Star Trek director J.J. Abrams  will helm the latest trek into "A galaxy far far away." Abrams had been courted by new Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy for months. You may recall that just last month J.J. turned down the possibility of directing the latest film.

Abrams has his hands full though. He's currently wrapping up Star Trek 2 and is also a producer for the next Mission Impossible movie. The move could complicate his relationship with Paramount.
