The ACN Morning Report -- Thursday, April 4, 2013

North Korea Moves Missiles Towards U.S. -- Carnival Cruise Lines, The US Military, and Senator Jay Rockefeller -- Disney Shutters Lucas Arts -- Anonymous Threatens North Korea -- The IRS Could Do Your Taxes -- Triumph In Trouble -- Obama To Give 5% For Sequester -- U.S. Sends Missile Defenses To Guam -- Fort Knox Temporarily Locked Down

NORTH KOREA SEEN MOVING MID-RANGE MISSILE TO EAST COAST

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea has moved what appears to be a mid-range Musudan missile to its east coast, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said on Thursday, quoting multiple government sources privy to intelligence from U.S. and South Korean authorities.

It was not clear if the missile was mounted with a warhead or whether the North was planning to fire it or was just putting it on display as a show of force, one South Korean government source was quoted as saying.

CARNIVAL RESPONDS TO SENATOR: NO WAY WE'RE PAYING FOR TRIUMPH

Carnival Corp. indicated in a couple of letters to Senator Jay Rockefeller that it has no intent to reimburse the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy for assistance in the recent Carnival Triumphaccident, the 2010 Carnival Splendor incidents, or any future problem where they require help from the U.S. government to aid a distressed vessel.
The senator from West Virginia penned a letter March 14 to Carnival CEO Micky Arison alleging that the U.S. Coast Guard responded to 90 “serious events” involving Carnival ships over five years, and that the Coast Guard and Navy had shelled out $4.2 million to cover the Carnival Triumph and Carnival Splendorincidents. The senator asked whether Carnival, since it pays “little or nothing in federal taxes,” will reimburse the Coast Guard and Navy.

DISNEY SHUTS DOWN LUCAS ARTS, CANCELS STAR WARS 1313 AND STAR WARS: FIRST ASSAULT

Staff were informed of the shutdown this morning, according to a reliable Kotaku source. Some 150 people were laid off, and both of the studio's current projects—Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313—were cancelled. Disney will still use the LucasArts name to license games, but the studio is no more.
Publicly, Disney is saying their current games could be licensed out to a different publisher or developer, but according to our source, that's unlikely. Our source says Lucas has pursued the option for "one or both games," but nothing happened. "With the teams now basically being dispersed I think both games are effectively dead forever," our source said.

ANONYMOUS  THREATENS CYBERWAR ON NORTH KOREA, STEALS 15,000 PASSWORDS

Notorious hacking group Anonymous has targeted pedophilescorrupt governmentsand financial institutions, however its latest target may be its most audacious yet. The group says that it has begun a new initiative called “Operation Free Korea” and is demanding controversial leader Kim Jong-un resign and install free democracy in the Asian country. Other demands include having North Korea abandon its nuclear ambitions and for the government to give universal and uncensored Internet access to its citizens. Anonymous hackers claim to have access to the country’s local intranets, mail servers and Web servers and are threatening to wage war if their demands are not met.
“We got all over 15k membership records of Uriminzokkiri.com and many more,” the group wrote. “First we gonna wipe your data, then we gonna wipe your badass dictatorship ‘government.’”

FILING TAXES: IT SHOULDN'T BE SO HARD

IN 2010 a panel created by the White House estimated that American taxpayers spend 7.6 billion hours and some $140 billion a year keeping the IRS off their backs. According to theWashington Post over 80% of taxpayers use software or pay someone to file their taxes. The national taxpayer advocate, a sort-of in-house IRS watchdog, once said, "If tax compliance were an industry, it would be one of the largest in the United States." But of course, it is an industry.
It is an industry made up of accountants and companies like H&R Block and Intuit, which makes the TurboTax software used by many Americans. And it is an industry that, according to ProPublica, has worked hard to keep the IRS from preparing your tax returns for you for free. Intuit, for example, has spent millions lobbying the federal government, opposing bills that would allow the IRS to send you pre-filled-in returns (the agency already has most of your relevant information) and supporting bills that would ban the practice.

CARNIVAL TRIUMPH BREAKS FROM DOCK

(CNN) -- The Coast Guard is searching for a man knocked into the Mobile River after high winds hit the area Wednesday, blowing the man's security guard hut into the water and causing the Carnival Triumph cruise ship to break loose from its repair dock.
The call to the Coast Guard came in at 1:45 p.m. CT as near hurricane-force winds smacked the Gulf Coast city of Mobile, Alabama.

OBAMA WILL RETURN 5% OF SALARY FOR BUDGET

President Obama plans to return 5 percent of his salary to the Treasury in solidarity with federal workers who are going to be furloughed as part of the automatic budget cuts known as the sequester, an administration official said Wednesday.

The voluntary move would be retroactive to March 1, the official said, and apply through the rest of the fiscal year, which ends in September. The White House came up with the 5 percent figure to approximate the level of spending cuts to nondefense federal agencies that took effect that day.

U.S. TO SEND MISSILE DEFENSES TO GUAM OVER NORTH KOREA THREATS

(Reuters) - The United States said it would soon send a missile defense system to Guam to defend it fromNorth Korea, as the U.S. military adjusts to what Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel called a "real and clear danger" from Pyongyang.
Hours later, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said North Korea had moved what appeared to be a mid-range Musudan missile to its east coast. It was not clear if the North planned to fire the rocket or was just putting it on display as a show of force, one South Korean government source was quoted as saying.

Chavez Successor Takes Command -- New Progress On Gun Law Changes -- Osama Bin Laden's Son-In-Law Caught -- VAWA Reauthorized -- WH Tours Cancelled; 74k/Year Saved -- North Korea Vows Nuclear Attacks -- Facebook Tries To Stay Hip -- Jobless Claims Fall -- Oldies Reunite For Futuristic Movie

CHAVEZ'S HAND PICKED SUCCESSOR TAKES COMMAND IN VENEZUELA, ELECTION A MONTH AWAY

www.foxnews.com
A flag-draped coffin carrying the body of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez floated over a sea of supporters Wednesday on its way to a military academy where it will lie in state. Away from the procession route, jittery Venezuelans facing an uncertain future without their larger-than-life leader flocked to supermarkets and gas stations to stock up on supplies, preparing for the worst a day after Chavez succumbed to cancer.

Tens of thousands lined the streets or walked with the casket in the capital, many weeping as the body approached, led by a grim drum major. Other mourners pumped their fists and held aloft images of the late president, amid countless waving yellow, blue and red Venezuelan flag.

SENATE PANEL APPROVES BILL TARGETING 'STRAW PURCHASES' OF GUNS

AFP/Getty Images
WASHINGTON — The Senate will take up its first firearms measure since the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, after the Judiciary Committee approved a bill Thursday to combat gun trafficking.
The proposal, steered by Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.), the committee chairman, would impose strict penalties for buying a firearm for someone who cannot legally do so, an act known as a straw purchase. The bill would also toughen punishment for selling a gun to a person prohibited from owning one.

OSAMA BIN LADEN'S SON-IN-LAW IN U.S. CUSTODY, CHARGED IN CONSPIRACY TO KILL AMERICANS

WASHINGTON -- The son-in-law of former al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden, described by U.S. officials as a figure akin to a mob family consigliere, is in U.S. custody and has been charged in a conspiracy to kill Americans, according to federal court papers unsealed late Thursday.
Sulaiman Abu Ghayth, who served as the strident spokesman for the terror organization in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, will appear today in federal court in New York.

OBAMA SIGNS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT REAUTHORIZATION

President Barack Obama signed into law a bill that extends for five years programs to help battered women and expands protections to Native Americans and gay-rights advocates.
“Today is about the millions of women -- the victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault -- who are out there right now looking for a lifeline, looking for support,” Obama said at a signing ceremony in Washington before an audience of women’s organizations, law enforcement officials, tribal leaders, survivors, advocates and lawmakers.

SECRET SERVICE: CANCELLING WH TOURS SAVES $74K A WEEK

The White House
ABC News tried all day yesterday to get an answer out of the White House and Secret Service about how much money will be saved by canceling White House tours. Now we have an answer: $74,000 per week, according to Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.
Here’s how they do the math:
The Secret Service says it takes an average of 37 officers to secure the tours. Each officer’s total pay (including benefits) averages $50 an hour. And, although the tours only are only open for 20 ½ hours per week, Donovan says the officers are on the clock for 40 hours. So – 37 officers at $50 an hour for 40 hours a week adds up to $74,000.

NORTH KOREA VOWS NUCLEAR ATTACKS ON US, SAYS WASHINGTON WILL  BE 'ENGULFED IN SEA OF FIRE'

www.foxnews.com
North Korea amplified its threatening rhetoric as the U.N. Security Council approved new sweeping sanctions, vowing to launch a first-strike nuclear attack against the United States and threatening to engulf Washington in a "sea of fire."

An unidentified spokesman for Pyongyang's Foreign Ministry said the North will exercise its right for "a preemptive nuclear attack to destroy the strongholds of the aggressors" because Washington is pushing to start a nuclear war against the North.

The decline in jobless claims, released on Thursday, may foreshadow a strong report on February employment.

Spielberg To Send "Lincoln" Copies To Schools

Steven Spielberg is sending free copies of his historical drama "Lincoln" to schools across the country so students can learn about President Abraham Lincoln.

DVDs will be distributed to every public and private middle and high school in the country as part of an educational outreach campaign called "Stand Tall: Live Like Lincoln," which urges youngsters to follow in the 16th president's example. A statement from Spielberg reads, "As more and more people began to see the film, we received letters from teachers asking if it could be available in their classrooms. We realized that the educational value that 'Lincoln' could have was not only for the adult audiences -- who have studied his life in history books -- but for the young students in the classroom as well."

In addition, executives at Participant Media will host special screenings of the Oscars favorite in eight U.S. towns named after Lincoln. They will take place on Tuesday -- the date of the president's birthday. Next month, 15 schools named in Lincoln's honor will also be treated to new equipment, including widescreen TVs, Blu-ray and DVD players, projectors and speakers.

Marvel's Long-Term Hulk Plans Revealed

From www.chud.com
Now, all this represents a pretty general yet major bunch of  spoilers for the overall direction of the Marvel Phase 2 and Phase 3 films. So you’re warned.
In any event, the jist of the news is this: the shift from Phase 2 to Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will largely revolve around The Hulk, and it will involve incoporating both Planet Hulk and World War Hulk into the films!
Now, before we dig into specifics, remember that this writing was almost on the wall beforeThe Avengers was released. It was well-reported that the Hulk was moving MASSIVE merchandise prior to the release of the massive blockbuster, way out of proportion to his fellow Avengers. The big green guy was obviously catching on in a big way with the kids, and his treatment in the film made him a standout star. Thus, Marvel’s priorities had to shift to incorporate the coming wave of love for Banner’s alter ego. It stands to reason that Marvel would have no issue taking the mandates from the merchandising divisions and setting up major Hulk action when the genral public is flipping their shit for the character after so many tries.
hulkThis is all stuff we were covering months and months ago, even as it was clear that a solo Hulk film was a ways away.
So now the specifics of El Mayimbe’s scoop, boiled down to its gooey center:
The Avengers 2 will see the Hulk getting up to some shit that causes the film version of the Illuminati to push forward the Planet Hulk scenario, and the big guy will end up in space. Solo film will happen, and The Avengers 3 will be some kind of take on World War Hulk once Banner returns to earth.
So there you have it. Logical AND mad exciting. With so many years between now and those films coming together, there’s every chance plans could be altered. Hell, they may be purely because this cat is out of the bag! Regardless, Marvel is also likely to come outright and say this is all bullshit, just in an attempt to maintain some control over what is known and assumed. I don’t envy their position- it must be frustrating to be working so hard to put cool shit out there only to have the details spoiled so far out in advance, but that’s the nature of the game these days. Besides, these films can’t and don’t need to operate on fanboy surprise boners any longer- it’s about putting the cool shit we want to see up on the big screen in as best a form as they can. Suprises are fun, but it wasn’t Thanos’ cheeky grin that sold 1.5 billion dollars worth of tickets globally.
The video of El Mayimbe detailing this discovery is below, and you can check out his Latino Review preface here.
Also –finally– I’d like to point ya’ll back to my big piece on The Hulk and his similarities to Superman (especially through the lens of their current cinematic standing) from last year. I think it just became more relevant than ever.
